What The Bible Says About Taking Alcohol

The bible does not expressly forbid drinking but does warn against the abuse of alcohol. So what does the bible say about drinking?

The bible allows that drinking in some instances for celebration and health are acceptable, even enjoyable. This can be found in the book of 1st Timothy 5:23 and Ecclesiastes 9:7;

“Stop drinking only water and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent ailments”.

“Go then, eat your bread in happiness and drink your wine with a cheerful heart; for God has already approved your works”.

About the dangers of alcohol, the bible recognizes that it can be used recreationally, and can be positive in that way.

Psalms 104:14-15; “And wine which makes man’s heart glad, oil to make his face shine and the bread that sustains his heart”.

However, the bible associates heavy drinking with other immoral behaviors and often warns against it.

Ephesians 5:18; “Don’t get drunk on wine, which leads to reckless indiscretion. Instead, be filled with the spirit”.

However, people have different beliefs and some may be in contrast and disagreement with the above thoughts.
