Quickly let’s go through the steps which would explore or make your songs sound nice next time.
1. Have good writing skills or employ a good songwriter
It’s good you have good writing skills as an artist who’s prepared to explore his or her talent in the music industry because good lyrics also sell your song. One may ask how can I write good lyrics, don’t worry I will talk about that in another article.
In other words, you can employ a good songwriter to write your lyrics for you when you noticed you are not good at writing your lyrics. Don’t feel shy to, because It’s not all our artist in the music industry that writes their lyrics, some buy lyrics from their colleagues who are good at writing their lyrics or employs a songwriter to do that for him/ her. It works for many artists though but I will advise you to learn if you are not good at writing because if you write your songs, you can express yourself well with the right word.
2. Discuss the song with a trusted friend, music analyst, or management if you have one
As an upcoming singer, you need to discuss your lyrics (song) with a friend, a music analyst, or your management to find out if your lyrics are having a complete thought or can make a hit.
Music is just like storytelling, so when you do not give your listeners or audience a complete summary of your story, they won’t be able to enjoy it. That’s what happens in music as well, So for this reason I advise you to discuss to know if your lyrics can attract the right listeners.
Note: People heals, consoles, meditate with songs.
3. Master your music diction
Most upcoming singers or Artists find this part so difficult. But the truth is, the way you mention words in your songs also makes them sound sweet and nice to the hearing.
Some words are mentioned special when singing example (heart = sounds like “Had”. Baby = sounds like baebe).
To feather add, mention, or sing words in your lyrics to sound well. It’s the priority of many listeners to understand what you are singing so that, they can connect or also sing along.
4. Identify your vocal type
Most upcoming singers /Artist also sometimes gets this part wrong. You are to know if you have a soft vocal or loud vocal. For example; you can’t be singing to a love song which is talking about a broken heart with a loud vocal, no! You have to sing it with a soft vocal. Soft vocals are suitable for love songs or “Rnb” in most cases.
So here you must know the type of song you are going to sing, the genre type, and the emotion to attach to it. These determine the kind of vocal to use.
Their research shows that some singers or artists are not having a strong vocal which sometimes leads them into shouting where the sweetness of their vocal is no more determined. You should get a bit back from the microphone or let your producer know the type and strength of your vocal to be able to set the microphone at a range where you don’t need to shout or stress yourself.
5. Pick ideas from songs
As an artist, you need to listen to other artists’ songs to pick ideas from them to create something new.
It’s important you also know how they arrange their songs(verse, chorus, hooks, etc..), melodies, and vocal techniques. It’s from those ideas you would be able to use to create something nicer and different from what you picked.
6. Get a good song producer/ sound engineer
(a) Now that your lyrics and melody are ready, it’s time to enter the boot (studio). Here is the most important part of your creativity otherwise you will end up wasting your money on a song that is supposed to be a hit.
Here’s where some Upcoming singers do a lot of mistakes. You should know that anytime you are in the studio with your producer (sound engineer) you are there to create and you should not allow being intimidated or been rushed into the studio. Working with a good producer is a plus for you. Some producers are very talented and creative, they are also patient with their works.
(b) Share ideas with your producer
When in the studio new ideas can pop up which you may like to do changes to some of your melodies (for Example; when the beatmaker (producer) is playing your beats) and you are to discuss ideas with the producer or beatmaker. t’s also important to ask the beatmaker to add more species to the instrumental to make your melodies complete. For this reason, I advise
also not depends on your melodies you have in your mind before entering the studio.
Note: any mistake produced, your song becomes total shit and waste and people may think you are not a good singer whilst you are.
7. Listen to the full record and do amendments
After recording your songs don’t be in haste to leave the studio without listening to the record over and over again. Maybe you sang a mistake, you pronounce a word wrongly (music diction) or you got a new idea to change or add something.
You must do these before leaving the studio.
8. Give much time for the song to be well mixed
In this part, a lot needs to be done otherwise the quality of your sound would be weak or sounds unprofessional. Here, the clarity of your sound (music) and how well your lead vocal and backing vocals are well mixed, matters most.
You may hear many singers say “professional song” it’s not anything different, all they are talking about is the sound quality of their songs. For this reason, you should leave your song with your producer for at least three (3) or more weeks, better still for some months.
Many mainstream artists, record and leave their songs with their producers to mix for about months or years before they release them.
